How science is helping unearth an 80-year-old Holocaust mystery

In a grassy patch of public park in central Warsaw last week, archaeologists dug up a rusted metal coat hook and the tangled chain of a decayed necklace. The objects couldn’t be more ordinary. Or more extraordinary.  The team excavated them from the buried rubble of the Warsaw Ghetto, where German occupiers sealed hundreds of thousands of Poland’s Jews into crowded, desperate squalor during World War II and over 80,000 died inside the walls of starvation, exposure and infectious diseases. Amid the twisted metal and bits of glass, the archaeologists unearthed small, unassuming remnants of daily life, suspended in hardened earth “like a time capsule,” says Philip Reeder, a professor…

iPhone 13 review: Apple delivers a delightful upgrade

The iPhone 13 and 13 Mini received a number of significant upgrades including new cameras, a bigger battery, more storage and a brighter screen. The iPhone 13 is a delightful upgrade to last year’s already wonderful iPhone 12 family. Some will be disappointed because it’s not radically different from previous models, but that’s actually part of the charm. Familiarity has been one of the keys to Apple’s success with the iPhone, and the iPhone 13 and 13 Mini are those same reliable friends that seemingly never change. The iPhone 13 starts at $829 (£779, AU$1,349) and the 13 Mini at $729 (£679, AU$1,199). That’s for the base model, which comes with 128GB…

Far Cry 6 review: Plenty of style, little story substance

Ubisoft I’ve played every entry in the Far Cry series, which spans back all the way to 2004. Why? Not for the crazy playground violence or the open worlds, but because the characters were so interesting. Previous antagonists Vaas (Far Cry 3) and Joseph Seed (Far Cry 5) were so compelling I couldn’t resist playing, just to see what would happen next. Far Cry 6’s cast brings the star power, with the game’s big bad guy Anton Castillo voiced by Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito, but doesn’t push the narrative in the same way as the franchise’s best characters historically have.  It’s not all a bust. Far Cry 6 makes a…

Cruise, Waymo granted first California passenger permits for driverless vehicles

Waymo and Cruise are now allowed to carry passengers under specific circumstances. Waymo Waymo and Cruise have been at the forefront of the autonomous passenger car development game for a few years now, and according to a report published Thursday by Reuters, they’re also the first companies to be granted permission by the California Department of Motor Vehicles to carry passengers in driverless vehicles in California. Why is that a big deal? Well, simply put, California doesn’t mess around when it comes to self-driving car regulations, so this means that both Waymo and Cruise’s systems are considered safe enough to operate on public roads with members of the public as…
